It’s our behaviors, attitudes and beliefs that build self-awareness and create the a-ha moments we so crave in our daily lives. However, as the familiar Dr. Phil phrase goes, “You can’t change what you are not aware of.” Many times, we can become disassociated with life, making us clueless to our surroundings, and it’s easier to stay this way then to become conscious of our true reality.
For example, if one is an alcoholic, he may not see it, nor believe that others can notice his problem with alcohol. He may have become an alcoholic due to lack of self-confidence or self-esteem or perhaps as a way to avoid emotional pain. In this case, he may feel it’s easier to stay unaware then it is to experience joy in knowing and dealing with what is truly happening in his life. Abraham Maslow believed that “What is necessary to change a person, is to change his awareness of himself.” You may be asking yourself how someone could start to make steps towards change.
“A person is a pattern of behaviors of a larger awareness.” -Deepak Chopra
Here are a few ways you can get started:
Step 1: Become aware of your environment. Pay close attention to what is happening around you and how it makes you feel.
Step 2: Become aware of your self-talk. What are you making the experience mean. Sometimes our filters are not always grounded in fact or reality. At times we can make assumptions.
Step 3: Ask questions to become clear on what is going on if need be. By asking questions you may learn you misunderstood.
Step 4: Pay attention to your inner voice or your intuition. Often times we will dismiss our gut feeling. Don’t, it is allowing you to be aware.
Step 5: Allow yourself to appreciate your new awareness’s. It is a learning process. Embrace each moment. Through this process looking back you will notice that your resources will expand, your internal emotional growth will expand and your relationships with others will become rich and fulfilling, this also means with yourself too. The more self-aware you are, the better choices you can make to represent the best version of yourself possible. Again, awareness opens doors to your passions, communication, spiritual growth, action, motivation and emotional healing.
My challenge for you starting today is to make a commitment to be aware. Contemplate why we might be reacting in a specific way in certain situations. What is this situation asking us to be aware of in our lives?
